Hot chicks

Chickens are so goofy!
They're all gangly teens
now, and the bolder ones
will come check you out
if you hold still for a while.
These gals are only a couple of months old, so at best they would start laying in November if artificial light were provided. But I doubt it will be, so we're looking at spring for fresh eggs.

I suspect a few will be lost to hawks, too, once they're allowed to roam outside their covered pen.

I splashed the hose in their pen to wash some of the debris out of their water dish and they all rushed over to scratch in the mud. Whereas the larger animals did not like being hosed down at all, despite the heat.
Which was good to know with regards to Dozer the bull (seen here, dozing). He's starting to get a little ... dominant. There was a tense moment when he started head-butting me a little too hard, and when I pushed him away, he pushed back and gave me a look like, "Oh yeah? Oh yeah?? You wanna start something?" I beat a hasty retreat!

But when I started the hose to top off the water buckets, the spray chased him off, so going back in the pen wasn't a problem. I suspect he'll be getting his own quarters soon.

Let's see how many hits this post gets from the "hot chicks" Googlers. I'm already No. 1 for squash porn (my sauteed zucchini blossoms). What they're really looking for, you don't want to know.

  2. pretty funny on the google thing - you should have hit them with the sprinklers a little so they can be 'hot, wet, chicks'

  4. You got chickens? I'm so jealous. They actually let you have rooster there, huh? Colorado Springs allows ten chickens but roosters are illegal. In the country where I am, I have to have all my neighbors sign off on a petition before I can get any. You got chickens? I am SO jealous.

    LOL.

  7. I've always wanted chickens and have only had one free-range rooster my boys found on the way home from school one day. That was long ago. The shot of the bull is terrific!

  9. Thanks! It's always fun to visit the critters.

Dani, I don't have the chickens at my house. They're with the goats, out in the country. There may be a rooster or two mixed in with them; it's hard to tell until they get older. Hens get combs and wattles, too, but usually less pronounced than roosters' after a certain age.

There is actually a job called "chicken sexer." It involved squeezing the chick's tuchus and looking for a tell-tale bump. But sometimes they get it wrong.
