Neither blood nor stings

From a very brief walk today:
Someone's heart bleeds for you. But not mine. I need to plant some bleeding heart, provided I can figure out a nice shady spot for it. Bleeding heart is such an interesting flower. I wonder why it evolved the way it did.

Meanwhile, I heard this before I saw it. Bzzzzzzzzz! Another swarm!
These guys must have just emerged, as they were a lot more active than the swarm I saw Saturday. I was able to stand about 6 feet away, but I didn't want to get any further into the swirling cloud of bees than that. (Click the photo if you want to see it larger. I left it full-size and sharpened it as much as I could.)

As it was, the bees seemed really interested in my just-washed hair. I get my shampoo and soap from Amy the Soap Crone. The lavender-mint shampoo bar is great, and the bees are a testament to its attractive and natural fragrance.

See, Amy? Bees are a good thing!

  1. Pretty flowers with interesting name indeed! The bees seem to like it around there! I would be freaking out....... 6 feet is quite close already, Kitt! Stay safe!

  2. I always wonder the same thing about Bleeding Heart -- it's just so odd looking. But pretty. Is it fairly hardy? I don't see a lot of it around here, but I wouldn't mind growing some.

  4. Safe enough, Blue! The bees are not aggressive at all. The risk of stinging really comes if one gets caught in your hair or clothes and panics. Or you do. (I had one caught in my hair this morning and it was very stubborn about getting out! But it did eventually.)

Lisa, I think they must be fairly hardy if they do so well here. I see them up in the mountains, Zone 4. They prefer part to full shade and I think moderate watering.

Groovy, never fear! The bees didn't bother me at all, and I don't think they would even have noticed me if I hadn't been standing right next to the swarm. I'll keep my lavender shampoo bar, thanks!
