Time really does fly. I feel a little shocked it's been almost 20 years.
I was there, in China, though not in Beijing when the shit went down. I was teaching in northeast China (Manchuria, really). I had been in Beijing just a couple of weeks earlier, riding a bike around the university district, dodging demonstrations and handing out resumes.
Getting out of the country was rather fraught. Some of my students ended up in prison, and I wasn't sure if I would, too.
But in the end I went back for another two years, in Beijing.
I was in northeast China, listening to the shortwave radio and saying, "Oh shit."
Tiananmen Square? YOu were there??? Can't believe it's been that long..... time really flies.
