Bye-bye, beast

This TV has been taking up valuable storage space, dragged out only for Mom's visits and the occasional movie night with the Sergeant. The impending switch to digital signals has finally pushed me to put it out for the alley scavengers.

It's kind of a funny feeling, going from "I don't watch TV" to "I can't watch TV."

  1. Oooh, I'd love to throw ours out, but other family members like it. So -- when does the 42" flatscreen wall unit arrive?

  2. Very, very impressive. I wish I had the same self-discipline but alas....

The writer Pete Hamill once referred to TV as "crack in a box." Perfect description.

  3. We went from "don't really" to "can't" about a year ago. Weird at first, but now I'm used to it. Even if I could afford a new TV, I'm not sure I would buy one.

  4. I haven't got a TV either. However, it's not as big a sacrifice as it sounds, because I can watch most of my favorite shows (Colbert, Daily Show) on my computer. DVDs, too.

  5. Wow, no TV? What a concept. I don't watch that much (really... I don't), but "can't" would make me want it more.

  6. Ha, Lisa! I am planning to pick up a small flat-screen, probably when Mom comes to visit in a few months. She needs to watch her dancing shows while I'm at work.

Pam, yes, that's an apt description!

Vicki, I haven't missed watching at all, but I like to have the option, and to offer to guests.

Beatrice, yes, I can watch DVDs on my computer, so I'm not completely "deprived."

Betts, I haven't watched TV at home for years, so not having one isn't much of a leap.

I should clarify that I don't watch TV for several reasons. First, I work in the evening, so there's never a good time to watch. Second, I refuse to pay for television, so no cable or TiVo. Third, if I turn the TV on, I can't turn it off. i.e. I can watch crap for hours and hours. My solution is to never turn it on. And after about 15 years of that, I'm pretty much used to it. It's not a moral judgment, just what works for me.

  7. I have a small TV for my yoga videos and a few old faves like Mary Poppins and the Miss Marple mysteries. But we don't watch network TV because I have to buy cable to get even the regular channels out here in Nowheresville. Too bad, so sad. LOL.

  8. Dani, that's how it started for me. I was living in South Dakota and couldn't get any TV without having cable, so I didn't have TV. I got a lot of reading done.
