Late-night dining and drinking

If you want a cheap, hearty meal late on a Saturday night, you can't go wrong with a big bowl of pho.Federal Boulevard has countless options for Vietnamese food. I usually go to Pho 79 or Pho Duy, but tonight we tried Pho 95. Packed with families even at 10 p.m. and very friendly. We ordered egg rolls to start with, and instead of just a plate of rolls, you get all the extras of pickled carrots and daikon, and mint, lettuce leaves, noodles ... I was a little confused about how to manage it all. Our server explained how to wrap up the rolls in the lettuce with the fixings, but I couldn't quite figure out the logistics of that. Any suggestions?

The pho was, as ever, hearty and filling. I usually order a small bowl, which is way more than I can ever finish anyway. I got the rare steak and well-done brisket bowl. Load it up with bean sprouts, basil, saw-leaf herb, a squeeze of fresh lime and sriracha. Mmmmm. And of course, iced coffee. Even though it was late.

Sometime later, we washed up at Billy's Inn, which has recently revamped itself from smoky dive to something a little more slick, with an extensive tequila list (and a fancy new neon sign). In hindsight, I recall seeing some chatter about Billy's on the food boards, and whether it was better in its new incarnation. I can't recall the verdict, though.

Certainly the patio was nice, and much quieter than the clamorous interior. I can't speak to the tequila – I had a Jack and ginger.

Mountain waterfall

Did a nice little hike today. More pictures later. Click this one to see it larger.

Destruction complete

You may recall I've been keeping an eye on the neighboring house that was advertised as a "Lot for Sale." When the construction fencing went up, I knew its days were numbered.

Sure enough, this morning I heard the tell-tale sounds of heavy equipment.
The morning was already well-advanced by the time I got myself caffeinated enough to wander down there with my camera and record its last moments of house-ness.

Goodbye, front door.
Farewell, picture window.
From home to rubble in a matter of hours.
I wish I could say something better will arise in its place. We'll see.

We really should call it Wine Group

I can be really bad about prepping for dinner parties. I think about what I want to make quite a bit, but the prep often is very last-minute. I dinked around all day, then started prepping in earnest late in the afternoon. Last week, Zoomie posted about the veggie bundles she'd made, and they looked really fun and easy. The photo above was taken by the Sergeant with his cellphone. "Don't you want to take pictures?" he asked. "No! Too busy!" So you can thank him for this bit of documentary evidence.

It was an all-girl party: my book group. Which I rarely can attend, as they usually meet when I'm working. I felt bad about kicking the Sergeant out of the house, so I got him a good seat at Coors Field for the Rockies game.
Again, picture from his phone. He met some people there and went for beers after.

With the veggies, I felt like a chicken and rice casserole would be just the thing. It was chilly today and I wanted old-fashioned comfort food. Something your grandmother might have taken to a church potluck. Yes, something involving cream of mushroom soup. If you really want the recipe, tell me and I'll post it later.
But right now I'm feeling the effects of lots of wine and all the other good eats that showed up. Pesto, and cream cheese with Jezebel sauce, and wine and olive bread, and frozen custard with brownies. And wine. Did I mention wine?

Red moon at night

The camera makes everything redder on long night-exposures, but the moon really was red. About 30 seconds after I shot this, it disappeared behind the mountains you cannot see.

I spy with my little eye

Huskies have the most beautiful eyes.
You'll notice they're not looking at me, above.
No, it was Sophie they were eyeing quite hungrily.
Mmmmm, poodle snack. Good thing their fence is tall and strong.

Good stuff or vinegar?

I was putting some things in the cellar and thought I might show you my wine stash. I am not a big wine-drinker, and am woefully ignorant of the finer points. But I am lucky to have a few bottles I inherited from my dad. After he died, Mom said, "Take whatever reds you find. I can't drink it."

I also get three bottles every year from Kent at Road 31 Wine Co. (formerly Green Truck Cellars). I know "Cousin Kent" through my friend Karen, and got to help in a very minor way with the harvest a couple of years ago. Kent makes a beautiful Pinot every year that sells out quickly and is featured on the wine lists at some of the best restaurants, including Bouchon.

I save the good stuff for special occasions with people who know good wine. Of my dad's stash, I've opened two in the last 15 years. Both were most excellent.

But both times I wondered if the wine would be vinegar. I have three bottles of the 1971 Chateau Haut-Brion left, a 1973 Beaulieu Vineyard Georges de Latour Cabernet, and a split of 1959 Chateau Margaux Bordeaux. Do you know wine? What do you think? How long can they last?
I guess there's only one way to really find out, but I'm waiting for more special occasions to do so.

Candy corn!

I get annoyed by early carols, but not by early candy.

Banana bread with chocolate chips

I was at Costco and saw they had chicken jerky dog treats, so I called Beeb to see if she wanted me to get some for Lannie and Leo. "Yes! I just ran out!" She wanted some bananas, too, but then opted against them because the Costco bunches are so big. The bananas go bad before she can eat them all.

I got some for myself, anyway. I don't have a problem with bananas going bad.

A good recipe is here.

Death-wish poodle

You may recall Lannie and Leo's last visit, which featured a trip to the emergency room after Leo pulled a loaf of rising bread dough off the counter and ate the whole thing.

Imagine my horror when I found this kerchief in the middle of the living room floor, after he pulled it out of a pile in the laundry room. Because it's not just a kerchief: It's filled with crystals that absorb water and expand. You soak it and then wear it around your neck to stay cool. The crystals keep it damp.

"Oh, shit!!!!" I said when I saw it there. "Not again!"

Luckily for Leo, he hadn't actually chewed it up; the crystals were still safely encased. But he sense my displeasure and refused to sit up for a picture of his malfeasance.

They just won't quit bugging me

This is some kind of shield bug (I think), also known as a stink bug. He turned up on some sage I picked for roasting tomatoes. I didn't disturb him enough to make him stink, but took him outside and shook him off. If he is indeed a shield bug, he's not particularly bad for the garden, so that's OK.

Oh, and supposedly shield bugs are also edible. Should I have put him in the oven?

Let me know if I'm wrong on my ID! (You can click on the picture to see him bigger.)

Invasion of the poodles

Just for a couple of days.

Silly kitchen gadget No. 19

Today's silliness comes once again from Chef'n, makers of such fine products as leaf shears and garlic rollers. Now, they do make some kitchen gadgets that I like, such as the one-handed pepper ball and the collapsible colander, but their better-mousetrap mentality goes a little too far with some of their gadgets.

This one is called the Fridge Fork. You attach the holder to a jar of condiments such as pickles or olives and use the fork to spear out what you need.

Because you know, sometime it's just too much effort to reach into a drawer to grab a fork.

Well, it's not really a fork at all, but prongs, which I guess means smaller holes in whatever you're fishing out.

Then what are you supposed to do with the fork? Put it back in the holder without washing it? Won't the fork, and the holder, get mungey pretty quickly? Ew.

But! It comes in designer colors: avocado, cherry (not shown) and meringue. And it's only $6 plus shipping.

Don't you want one?
