What do you think of this one?

You've seen the "mansion home" for sale in my neighborhood, which at least includes a nod to the Craftsman style of bungalows that are common around here. The bulk of the new construction doesn't even have that, being monolithic stucco duplex monstrosities that could be plunked down in mass-produced suburbia anywhere. (I may add a photo of one or two to this post tomorrow.)
So I have mixed feelings about this one, but I'm leaning toward liking it. If you're going to shoot for "different," you might as well go all-out. It also looks like they're putting solar panels on this, which is good. I don't know if it's a custom home or being built on spec.

Certainly you would have a clear idea of how to furnish it. Just as my house pretty much demands Victorian-style furniture, this will require a hefty dose of modern, which could look quite fabulous if done right. There's no ambiguity here.

The houses on either side are obvious scrape-off candidates. I wonder how soon that will happen, given the current market.

Then there's this one, which is newly listed. The sellers aren't even bothering to pretend it won't be scraped; the sign says "Lot for Sale."
Stay tuned.

  1. Ick! IMHO, that house is top-heavy, with the appearance of a larger squat wood block plunked on top of a smaller squat stucco block with no regard of how the window and door openings related to each other. I'm sure glad I don't have to look at it or even drive by it.

  3. Well, it's still under construction, so they may be planning to add patios or decks around the outside to pull it together. Not to mention landscaping!

I confess I have a fondness for strikingly modern houses, though I couldn't live in one without completely ditching every heirloom piece of furniture I own. And I won't do that.

  4. The first one is scary! Why are they just selling the lot for the 2nd one? It's a charming little house. Around here usually when they do that it's because a developer is coming in to add a shopping center or 20 houses where there used to only be one and an orchard.

  5. Yes, it's a cute little house, as were many of the other houses that have been scraped off around here. Whoever's selling it is clearly hoping to attract a developer to do just that. Cute little house on a double lot means future monster duplex. They're not even pretending that someone will buy it because the house is cute.

  6. Hmmm...I don't mind that modern one...though perhaps that's because it's very like the house my dad and step-mom live in. And theirs is plunked down in a neighborhood of big Georgians and early 20th century houses. It's rather startling when you first see it. I should get some pictures of it.

  7. How sad the word 'scraped' is. To have the house you were raised in or your grandmothers home 'scraped'. The modern house would look better at the end of a long drive lined with pine trees. It looks a little out of it's element.

  8. For some reason I think I like the flat stacked house. This might be because I'm living in the midst of 10,000 oversized Georgian monstrosities. Here in Fairfield County we are still seeing signs that read "Tear Down!" Rather joyfully too. I try not to look.

  10. I love the modern one. I like it when neighborhoods mix it up.

The other one is, eh, scrape-able.

  12. I'll be sure to post more photos once things green up around here and progress (if you want to call it that) has been made.

  13. I like the new one, it still has warmth with the use of timber and if decent landscaping is done it will look even better..looking forward to updates :O)
